Supreme Court Orders NIA Probe into Malda Voter List Clash, Calls Incident ‘Calculated Assault’
The Supreme Court has ordered an NIA probe into the Malda voter list clash, calling it a calculated assault on the electoral process. The April 1 violence in Mothabari led to arrests, central force deployment, and heightened tensions ahead of the 2026 polls.
According to the details of the incident, crowds angered over the removal of names from electoral rolls during the Election Commission of India’s Special Intensive Revision surrounded officers engaged in verifying discrepancies. The confrontation quickly intensified, raising concerns over the integrity and safety of the electoral exercise in the region.
Taking serious note of the developments, the Supreme Court directed the NIA to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter. The court also ordered the deployment of central forces to ensure the protection of officials and to maintain order during the ongoing electoral verification process.
Law enforcement agencies have so far arrested 18 individuals in connection with the violence. Among those detained are an ISF candidate and the alleged mastermind,
Mofakkerul Islam. Authorities have linked them to the unrest, which included highway blockades and incidents of stone-pelting that resulted in damage to vehicles.
The situation in Malda remains tense, with administrative and security measures being intensified to prevent further disruption. The Supreme Court’s intervention underscores the gravity of the incident and highlights the need to safeguard democratic processes from coordinated interference and violence.
